Monday Moral Dilemma Devotional #2

This is the second in a series of Moral Dilemma Devotionals that we wrote to help your family have conversations about demonstrating our faith and following Jesus.

Check back next Monday for another one!

Harper was over at Emily’s house for a Friday night sleepover. They ate pizza, had ice cream, and laughed a lot. As the night wore on, Emily suggested they watch a movie. The movie that Emily wanted to watch was one Harper had never heard about, but based on the rating she was positive that her parents would not approve of her watching it.

Harper was conflicted. She didn’t want to seem weird to Emily and she was curious about the movie.

She also didn’t want to disobey her parents, and, of course, she did not want to get into trouble.

Harper ended up not saying anything, so Emily started the movie.

In the middle of the movie, Emily’s mom came in the room. She was not pleased at all about what Harper and Emily were watching.

She made them turn it off. Emily’s mom was very upset.

“Whose idea was this?” Emily’s mom asked.

Before she could even think, Harper heard Emily tell her mom, “It was Harper’s idea!”

Harper and Emily both knew it was a lie, but if Harper told the truth now it might risk her friendship. Of course, if she didn’t say what really happened, Emily’s mom would tell her parents and she’d be in huge trouble.

  1. How do you think Emily feels?

  2. Why do you think Emily lied?

  3. What choices does Emily have now?

  4. How do you think Harper feels?

  5. Why do you think Harper was silent about watching the movie?

  6. What choices does Harper have now?

  7. What should Harper do?

  8. What should Emily do?

Consider this verse and how it might apply to this situation.

Proverbs 12:22 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.
